Hotel Spotlight: Embassy Suites in Old Town Alexandria

Travel Date: October 2026

A weekend getaway across the cobblestones of Old Town Alexandria felt like the ideal chance to carve out a proper book-and-stationery crawl. On our radar: Long Dark House Books, romance boutique Friends to Lovers Bookstore, and paper-goods staple Penny Post.

In theory, it was a quiet bibliophile’s dream afternoon. In practice, Old Town’s shopping corridors were buzzing at full volume. Independent shops drawing massive foot traffic is always cause for celebration, and it warms my heart to see small businesses thriving with lines out the door. But for someone hoping to linger over forgotten titles, test delicate fountain pens, and savor the slow hush of the shelves, the sheer density made browsing tough. Between dodging elbows and maneuvering packed aisles, it was hard to truly connect with the spaces, leaving me a bit disappointed by the rush.

Thankfully, our home base for the weekend offered the exact decompression chamber we needed.

The Vibe: 4 Stars

Classic, spacious, and grounded, the Embassy Suites Old Town provides a calm, welcoming retreat right in the middle of historic Alexandria. The hotel itself would have rated five stars for vibe, but the area where it’s located rated just three stars. There wasn’t the bustling street scene I’d hoped to find. Maybe next time.

The Amenities: 3 Stars

The layout gave us fantastic living space and a private outdoor balcony, which is always a coveted bonus. However, a couple of details kept it from reaching its full potential. The balcony came completely bare—without a chair or table, it functions strictly as a brief spot to stand rather than a place to linger with a morning brew. In the bathroom, the shower leaned noticeably small and suffered from lack of decent water pressure, turning what should have been a restorative rinse into a bit of a compromise.

The Comfort: 5 Stars

The suite delivered absolute rest. Spotless, crisp, and wonderfully quiet, the bedroom and living quarters provided the restorative sanctuary you hope for when booking a weekend escape. The bed was genuinely comfortable, shutting out the daytime clamor completely and making it effortless to sink in and recharge.

The Staff: 5 Stars

From check-in to evening services, the team kept everything seamless, professional, and genuinely warm. The crown jewel arrived around 10:00 PM when late-night room service cravings struck. Late dining orders can often feel like an afterthought, but our delivery was prompt, polished, and delivered with genuine care and attentiveness.

The View: 4 Stars

Having an open-air balcony perched over the neighborhood provides a lovely connection to Old Town’s distinctive rhythm. While it lacked seating to sit and take it in over an extended period, stepping out into the fresh evening breeze to look out over the city added an airy, refreshing dimension to the stay.

The Highlight: Late-Night Dining: All the Stars

A special note has to be made for that 10:00 PM room service. Late-night hotel meals usually mean lukewarm fries or a hurried drop, but this was impeccable. The food arrived piping hot, freshly prepared, and plated with high-end dining presentation rather than late-night compromise. It turned an otherwise sleepy retreat into one of the absolute culinary highlights of our trip.
