Road Trip 2026: Day 3

Travel Date: March 2026

A Day of Elegance: The Ultimate Peabody Experience and Beyond

Memphis is often celebrated for its grit and rock ‘n’ roll soul, but there is a side of the Bluff City that is pure, timeless elegance. Trading the neon of Beale Street for a day of sophistication, we immersed ourselves in the historic charm of The Peabody Hotel and the scenic beauty of the Mississippi River.

The King’s Clothier: Shopping at Lansky Bros.

We knew afternoon tea at The Peabody required the right “threads,” so we began our day at Lansky Bros., conveniently located inside the hotel. This isn’t just a shop; it’s a legend. Known as the “Clothier to the King,” this is where Elvis Presley famously curated his signature style.

The service and curation here are impeccable—it feels less like a boutique and more like a living museum. We left with a complete new look, from the belt to the shoes, ready to take our places in the lobby for the event I had been anticipating most: the Peabody Ducks.

The Most Famous Walk in Memphis: The Peabody Ducks

No trip to the Peabody is complete without witnessing its most eccentric and beloved tradition. Every day at 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM, the Peabody Ducks make their grand entrance (or exit) via a plush red carpet.

The Duckmaster leads the procession to the tune of John Philip Sousa’s “King Cotton March.” It is whimsical, slightly surreal, and an absolute must-watch. We lucked out by arriving early and snagging a table near the lobby bar, providing a front-row seat to the procession. While we waited, we enjoyed mimosas and light snacks—a perfectly relaxed start to a magical morning.

Sipping on something sparkling while waiting for the world-famous Peabody Ducks to make their grand entrance.

Afternoon Tea at Chez Philippe

After the parade, we lingered over French-pressed coffee until our reservation for Afternoon Tea at Chez Philippe. I’ve enjoyed my fair share of tea services, but this is, by far, the most impressive experience I’ve ever had.

The experience begins long before the first sip. The table settings are a masterclass in elegance, featuring fine English bone china, that the chef chose himself, and polished silver that gleams under the soft glow of the chandeliers. Each place setting is a curated arrangement of delicate patterns and crisp linens, making the table feel like a private gallery.

Table for tea. There’s something so timeless about crisp linens and polished silver.

Served in a stunning, high-ceilinged room, the three-course menu is a parade of savory finger sandwiches, warm, buttery scones with Devonshire cream, and an array of delicate pastries. The service is choreographed with the precision of a symphony; the staff is both invisible and ever-present, ensuring your teapot is never empty and every need is met with old-world hospitality.

Details matter. Loving the hummingbird design on this china for afternoon tea.

The true highlight is the charming surprise at the end of the meal. As a nod to the hotel’s famous residents, the final course includes a white chocolate duck. It’s a playful, delicious “wink” to the Peabody tradition that leaves you smiling long after the last crumb is gone.

Dinner at Paulette’s and a Riverside Stroll

After a restorative break back in our room, we headed to Harbor Town for dinner at Paulette’s. A Memphis institution for over 40 years, it offers a cozy, European-inspired atmosphere that feels miles away from the bustle of the city. I opted for the pork chops—tender, juicy, and resting in a divine, sweet glaze, served alongside perfectly prepared stewed apples and sweet potatoes.

A perfect sear. Dinner is served.

To close out the night, we took a short walk along the Mississippi River. As a lover of bridges, I was captivated by the view. While the mile-long pedestrian bridge was a bit far for a post-dinner stroll, the vehicular bridge provided a spectacular show. Lit by vibrant, changing LED displays, the steel arches reflected off the dark water in a perfect blend of romance and joy.

The Final Word

Memphis has a way of surprising you. While the blues will always be its heartbeat, the refined rituals of the Peabody and the quiet power of the Mississippi offer a different, equally captivating rhythm.
